How we evaluate gambling sites

Match.Center Nigeria – For your best bookmaker match!

How we evaluate gambling sites

Our team doesn’t hand out high scores easily. We prefer to focus on merit. At Match.Center, we rate every legal bookmaker in Nigeria using nine specific parameters. Our experts compare them to each other for a clear and comprehensive assessment. Below, we explain how the process works.

Many Nigerian sportsbooks score low. This is due to one of three reasons:

  • We work in the bettors’ interest. No platform can buy a score in our ratings.
  • Our team has a lot of knowledge about how bookies operate in different countries, including best practices. Our standards are high.
  • Our focus is on betting products. Adding lotteries, casinos, or bingo doesn’t get a bookmaker extra points.

Our nine parameters fall into three categories:

  • Technology & Product
  • Offers & Payments
  • UX & Support

Each parameter is marked from 0 to 10. The overall rating is an average of these scores. If a betting site leads the industry in one of the three categories, it unlocks an achievement.

Below we outline each of the categories our team uses to evaluate bookies operating in the Nigerian market, which is one of the fastest growing in Africa.

Technology & Product

Here, we evaluate the quality of the gambling product. We look at betting coverage, available stakes, platform features, and odds.

Events and markets

Our first step is to determine the number of sports and asses available wagering options. For example, we check Pre-Match odds for popular events like EPL matches. A bookmaker offering 30+ disciplines and 500+ different outcomes per game gets 10 points. If the margin on a major football market like the Money Line is under 4%, that’s also the highest point.

Our scoring system is straightforward, evaluating both the range of sports and the margin size, as outlined below.

Ranking by number of sports
Ranking by number of sports
Gradation by margin size
Gradation by margin size

But market size isn’t everything. Some sites offer dozens of bets on a game’s final score, but only a couple of total markets. While there are plenty of choices, this isn’t the most useful selection, because it lacks more popular options like totals. That’s why we don’t just count the number of options. We measure relevance, too.

Live Streaming

The primary aspect of assessing a bookmaker’s In-Play services is their streaming features. Since almost every sportsbook now offers In-Play betting, it becomes challenging to differentiate them, especially with bookies catering to different sports. However, not all sites provide a strong live-streaming selection, if they offer one at all. This makes it a useful indicator of an operator’s dedication to offering quality and ease to those wagering on real-time events.

We focus on how many sports and leagues are covered, the more – the better. For example, our team checks if there are broadcasts for major tournaments like La Liga or the NBA. We also examine access: Is a registration or positive balance required? Do you need to place a bet to watch for 24 hours? A live-streaming schedule and visual infographics can earn extra points.

Mobile Apps

A top-notch mobile platform loses its appeal if the product falls short, as it’s hard to separate the app rating from the overall bookmaker service. That’s why our team thoroughly reviews apps, but when scoring, we focus on availability: five points if both Android and iOS apps are offered.

The reasoning mirrors live streaming – developing and maintaining apps is also a complex and costly process. If a bookmaker provides applications, it shows their commitment to catering to the entire market and providing convenience to punters.

We dislike the misleading practice of showing Android and iOS logos that merely link to a browser shortcut disguised as an app. To expose this, we test the links to ensure the app actually downloads. That’s what earns the points.

Offers & Payments

Everyone enjoys getting bonuses and cashing out winnings. In this section, we assess platforms’ quality by reviewing payment methods, welcome offers for new customers, and bonuses for existing bettors individually.

Payment Systems

We give one score for each available deposit method, as this increases customer flexibility and serves as a strong indicator of the platform’s quality. While most users tend to rely on just one or two methods, top bookmakers provide a wide range of options, making it easier for potential customers to convert into active ones.

More methods mean more convenience. However, we score strictly. Visa, Mastercard, and other bank cards only count as one point combined. Why? In our opinion, the specific debit card used to fund your betting account matters little. It’s still tied to a bank account, and using any bank card is just one method of making a deposit.

The same applies to other methods like e-wallets (Skrill, Neteller, etc.). We give an extra point for mobile payments and another for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Therefore, scoring the full 10 points for payment systems in the Match.Center rating is quite challenging.

Bonuses for New Customers

You can claim every offer you’re legally entitled to; there’s no financial value in staying loyal to one betting site. However, some incentives are easier to claim than others, and this is factored into our ratings.

A larger prize doesn’t always mean a better rating. For example, if a ₦200,000 bonus comes with complex wagering terms like a 30x rollover at high minimum odds, that offer may only score 1 point despite its flashy appeal. We also examine whether the gift is divided into parts, offered as a package, or provided as a single lump sum. The strictness of the qualification criteria is another key factor to consider.

A no-deposit bonus of ₦250 or more earns top marks. Similarly, bookmakers can score 10 points if they provide several welcome offers with favourable conditions, like separate offers for sports and football.

We don’t assess casino rewards in the same way. If available, we note them, but that’s all. However, if the promo requires both wagering and slot spinning, it can lower the rating. In our opinion, sports wagering is more strategic than casino games, where outcomes rely solely on RTP settings, not player decisions.

Bonuses for Existing Customers

Bookmakers often highlight new customer incentives in their marketing to attract a wider audience. However, for regular punters, recurring deals are far more valuable.

Platforms that offer Free Bet Clubs, cashback programmes, regular reload bonuses, or accumulator insurances score the highest in our ratings. These promotions reward you daily or weekly, depending on your activity, and quality loyalty systems provide rewards even if your bets win.

We also award points for loyalty schemes, frequent enhanced odds for singles and accumulators, along with additional offers for mobile users and other ongoing promotions for loyal customers.

UX & Support

At some point, most users will contact support or consult the terms, usually when there’s an issue with a bet settlement or they haven’t received an expected bonus. The bookmaker must provide clear, fast, and courteous explanations. We thoroughly assess the quality and responsiveness of customer service in such cases.

Registration and Customer Support

Creating an account on a legal betting site involves more than just providing a username and email. Legal requirements mean bookmakers request detailed information. The top-rated sites ensure this process remains straightforward and transparent, and we evaluate the clarity of each step in the sign-up process.

Customer support should be accessible not only to existing users but also to potential customers. We review available contact methods, check if a chatbot is required to reach a live operator, whether support operates 24/7, and how easy it is to contact them with just one click.

Legal Information

At Match.Center, we only evaluate fully legal betting platforms, and this should be clear and visible. We verify that legal information is readily accessible, with clickable links, and that there is comprehensive detail about stake settlements across various sports and markets.

Ease of Navigation

Although navigation is often seen as subjective, we strive to assess it objectively. We also consider tools like search functions, favourites, and customisable smartphone notifications that help you quickly locate bets.

If everything is easy to find at a glance, we consider the platform user-friendly, especially for newcomers, and that earns a solid 10 points.

What We Don’t Consider

  • Online reviews. We know positive reviews for bookmakers are rare and often unreliable. So, instead of focusing on bots’ praise or complaints from frustrated users, we rely on our expertise to evaluate the operator’s product.
  • Reputation in the market. It’s too vague and hard to quantify. We understand that size doesn’t always mean quality. Smaller niche bookies often treat customers like royalty, while large corporations may shift focus from sports wagering to casinos over time.
  • Partnerships. Our ratings at Match.Center are based on the same criteria for all betting sites, regardless of whether they are partners or not.
  • Bonus limitations on white-label platforms. Some companies run multiple platforms with shared promotion policies, where users can only claim one incentive across all sites. While we don’t like these restrictions, we rate bonuses – not company policies – so it’s important to be aware of this.
